University blog hubs

I’ve recently discussed academic blog hubs here and mentioned the one maintained by the University of Cape Town. Thanks to Patrick Vandewalle and Robert Forkel, I’ve found a few more and compiled a list. Here it is:

Stanford University

McGill University

Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne

University of Cape Town

Katholieke Universiteit Leuven

I’m sure there are many more. Do you know of any?

Nice collection, but all these examples follow another pattern: That of universites (or other organizations) providing their members with individual blogs. This is not so new, the University of Minnesota is providing such an platform, UThink, since 2004. (Cf. http://log.netbib.de/archives/2005/05/09/weblogs-fur-alle-an-bibliotheken-in-minnesota/and http://blog.lib.umn.edu/)
From my point of view, we have another, more challenging and perhaps more important step to go. We have to encourage people to build their own personal learning environment (PLE), respectively personal writing/publishing environments. Those environments can then be loosely coupled with existing building blocks like feed aggregators (Planet, Gregarius etc.) Have a look at Planet York (http://planetyork.yorku.ca).
